Porter Police Save Woman Using Tourniquet
On June 1, 2022, at approximately 6:11 PM, Porter Police Officer A. Haynes and Sgt. T. Blythe were dispatched to a residence on N. River Drive in reference to a female who was bleeding profusely from her leg, according to Lt. Dickey of The Porter Police.
Officers arrived on scene and quickly assessed that the patient, who was in and out of consciousness, had lost a significant amount of blood. Officer Haynes and Sgt. Blythe, who are both Certified Indiana EMT’s and trained in Tactical Medical Care, worked together to quickly apply a Combat Action Tourniquet and a pressure-dressing to stop the bleeding until Fire and EMS arrived. In December of 2021, The Porter Police Department equipped the officers with North American Rescue Trauma Kits to treat life threatening bleeding such as this incident.
Prior to officers’ arrival, the patient was assisted by her neighbors, whose efforts are to be commended. The patient was reported to be in good condition at the hospital and the injury to her leg was accidental in nature.
The Porter Police Department responded as an assisting agency to the Porter Fire Department and Northwest Health EMS.
