Protestors Arrested Saturday Outside Airport
On Saturday, around 12:43 PM, Gary Police were dispatched to a call for service at 6000 Airport Rd. reference protesters in the roadway, according to Gary Police.
Officers who responded advised the protesters to cross the street if they wanted to protest and out of traffic, however the protesters continued to obstruct traffic.
The protestors were rallying for
Anti-Deportation measures saying the government was flying immigrants out of the Gary Airport. A flyer for the protest stated, “The Gary airport processes five states’ worth of deportations, including ours from Chicago. On Saturday, Jan. 18, the anniversary of Tort’s murder & the Day of the Forest Defender, we’re meeting at 11:45 at the Gary Airport South Shore Line stop to demonstrate against that.”
Three of the protesters were arrested after multiple agencies were called in and a handful of the protesters allegedly resisted officers.
Responding agencies included Lake County Sheriff’s Department, East Chicago Police Department, Department of Natural Resources and Northern Indiana Transportation Commuter Train Police.
