ROLLOVER CRASH SHUTS DOWN CALUMET AVE IN MUNSTER FRIDAY NIGHT
Munster — A violent rollover crash shut down a stretch of Calumet Avenue just south of Ridge Road Friday night after a speeding vehicle reportedly slammed into an oncoming driver and a utility pole, ejecting the reckless driver behind the wheel.

The crash occurred around 8 p.m. after witnesses and preliminary information indicate the northbound driver was traveling at extreme speeds on Calumet Avenue. An officer near Community Hospital spotted the vehicle speeding and attempted to turn around to catch up, but the driver had already sped several blocks north within seconds.
By the time the officer approached the area near Jewel-Osco, the reckless driver reportedly clipped a southbound vehicle head-on. The impact caused the suspect’s vehicle to roll over and strike a pole, ejecting the driver onto the roadway.

The southbound driver who was struck was able to get out on his own but sustained a head injury, according to witnesses. He was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
The South Lake County Crash Reconstruction Team responded to the scene to conduct a full investigation. Munster Police closed the roadway for several hours as crews worked, reopening Calumet Avenue around 11 p.m.

No further details, including the condition of the ejected driver or any potential charges, have been released at this time. Region News Source will update as more information becomes available.
