Schererville Celebrated The 100th Birthday Of A Local Resident Wednesday
On Wednesday 4/14 officials from The Schererville Police Department, Schererville Fire Department, Honor Flight Chicago, and Mission BBQ celebrated the 100th birthday of Schererville resident Clelia Ginay.
Clelia Ginay born in New York City in 1921 and went on to serve as a nurse for the country right after high school during WWII with United States Navy. Clelia fulfilled her military service as a First Lieutenant in October of 1945. In 1947 her and her husband (John Ginay) moved back to his hometown of East Chicago. Clelia renewed her nurse’s license and became a private duty nurse when she moved to EC. She worked at St. Catherine’s Hospital as an ICU nurse and then worked at the Hammond Clinic as an Emergency Room nurse. She retired in 1975 to help care for her mother-in-law. They had homes both in Schererville, Indiana, and Arizona so they could spend the cold months away from the Midwest.
Ginay is also a member of the Schererville Police Department’s morning call program for many years. Participating individuals are contacted several mornings each week by a volunteer to check on their well-being. This program is a free service enabling seniors alone to feel more secure. In particular, this program offers senior citizens a few precious moments during the day to interact with someone who cares.
The staff from the department led by Kelly Wynkoop coordinated the parade and celebration for Ginay Wednesday. To see the parade and celebration view the video below provided by The Town of Schererville.
