Schererville Woman Accused of Supplying Drugs to 14-Year-Old Granddaughter

SCHERERVILLE — A 55-year-old woman is accused of providing prescription pills, marijuana, alcohol, and other substances to her 14-year-old granddaughter over the course of a year, leading to an overdose in late June, according to court documents.

On June 27, Schererville police were called to Sherwood Lake Apartments for reports of a possible juvenile overdose. Officers found the girl lethargic but conscious. She told police she had smoked marijuana earlier that morning. Paramedics took her to Franciscan Dyer Hospital for treatment.

Later, the teen’s mother reported finding a bag containing blue pills in the girl’s jacket at the hospital. Investigators determined the pills were Clonazepam, a Schedule IV controlled substance, prescribed to the girl’s grandmother, Lora Susan Jones. A prescription bottle with Jones’ name was also found in the home where the overdose occurred.

Detectives reviewed a Snapchat video recorded by the teen that morning, in which she admitted taking seven “Kpins” — slang for Klonopin — and smoking marijuana. During a later interview, the girl said her grandmother had been supplying her with the pills, as well as alcohol, nicotine vapes, and marijuana gummies for over a year. She also claimed Jones had offered her cocaine and provided drugs to her friends.

Family members told police they believe Jones had been “grooming” juveniles to sell her prescription medication and expressed concern that a pill had been left within reach of a 4-year-old child in the home.

Jones allegedly denied the accusations to police but, according to relatives, has since made threatening remarks toward family members for speaking to investigators.

Court records show Jones has been charged in Lake County with multiple felonies, including dealing in a controlled substance to a minor, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and misdemeanor criminal recklessness.
