School Bus and SUV Collide Leaving Driver Critically Hurt
At approximately 8:30, Thursday morning, police officers with the Lake County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to the 3300 block of W. 133rd Avenue in unincorporated Crown Point for a two-vehicle crash involving a Crown Point school bus. The bus was involved in a head-on collision with a Ford Edge SUV.
A preliminary investigation suggests the bus was traveling west on 133rd when it veered off the road to the north, struck a mail box and overcorrected to the left of the center of the road and into the path of oncoming traffic, according to Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. It’s believed the driver of the Ford attempted to avoid crashing, but both vehicles collided.
The bus driver and a bus monitor were the only people on the bus at the time of the crash. There were no students onboard.
The driver of the SUV was transported to an area hospital with critical injuries. The bus driver was transported to a local medical facility for evaluation. The observer on the bus was released from the scene.
The cause of this crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Department Traffic Unit.
