Second Grader Found With Gun Magazine In Cedar Lake

A Cedar Lake School Resource Officer was made aware of a second grader that had a gun magazine on him by another student based on the teachings of “See Something Say Something,” according to Chief William Fisher of the Cedar Lake Police.

On February 10 , 2020 at approximately 12:10 pm a School Resource Officer was working at Jane Ball Elementary School in Cedar Lake, he was notified that a second-grade student had a firearm magazine in his possession.

Officer Dustin Corbin immediately responded to the complaint and found the child to be in possession of an empty, unloaded handgun magazine. The child was immediately removed and taken to the Principals office, Fisher said. The parents of the child were contacted and it was determined the empty magazine did come from the child’s home. It was also determined the child never had access to any weapons or ammunition, the empty magazine was accidentally left out.

There was no threat to the safety of the other children in the school and the school is handling the situation accordingly in conjunction with the Cedar Lake Police Department.

  1. Although being in possession of a magazine in a school is certainly disturbing and really dumb on the kids part, I am not sure that it is by itself
illegal. I would be very interested in knowing.
