Several Injured After Firework Accident In Griffith Saturday

At approximately 9:30 PM on June 29, 2024, Griffith officers were dispatched to a disturbance involving numerous injuries due to a fireworks accident in the 900 block of N Arbogast Street, according to Griffith Police.

Officers, Griffith Fire Department, and EMS personnel immediately responded to the scene, where they found several victims. It appears that a private fireworks show at the residence had a firework malfunction.

Preliminary investigations reveal that seven individuals were injured, and four houses and ten vehicles were damaged in the incident. Friends of the families have advised us that an 8 year old was flown to Comer’s with a serious chest injury.

Several homes in the vicinity from the show had numerous holes through the siding and windows. The inside walls of a home across the street had holes which measured 4+ inches in the drywalling.

Nearby neighbors said it was a fun celebration with around 50-100 people before the accident occurred. Video below shows the moments security cameras captured the large explosion which shook nearby homes blocks away.

The Griffith Police Department thanked the Highland, Merrillville, Schererville, and Munster Police Departments, along with Superior EMS and the Schererville Fire Department, for their assistance in this incident.
