Sheriff Department Investigating Gary Police Shooting Sunday
At approximately 4 p.m. Sunday, December 14th police officers with the Lake County Sheriff’s Department were requested to investigate an officer-involved shooting in Gary, according to Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez.

A preliminary investigation has revealed Gary police officers had responded to a call for a domestic incident involving a potentially suicidal individual at a home in the 2100 block of Tennessee Street, Martinez said. An adult male had reportedly been cutting himself. When officers arrived, the man ran from the home and encountered officers in the area of 21st and Ohio where it’s believed an officer opened fire.
A 20-year-old man was transported to a local hospital with a gunshot wound and self-inflicted stab wounds. He was taken to a hospital in Chicago for further treatment.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Department Detective Unit is investigating the officer-involved shooting. This is an ongoing investigation and no further details were released.
