Four children were inside the eastbound vehicle, including a 2-year-old who was unresponsive at the scene. Paramedics indicated that child did regain consciousness while being transported to the hospital and was scheduled to be flown to a specialty hospital with a broken femur. A 4-year-old was being treated for a possible neck injury. A 9-month-old and 3-year-old were checked and appeared to be in good health, Martinez told RNS. It’s believed all of the children were restrained in car seats at the time. An adult female passenger was treated for a broken pelvis.

The only occupant of the southbound vehicle was the driver, who suffered a broken ankle and wrist.

Two nurses, a Richton Park FF/EMT, and his wife who was also an EMT were passing by and stopped to render first aid, Fire Chief Ryan Kennedy said. “They were Rockstars, changed the outcome of the accident, and saved a little girls life.”

Lake Dale Fire, Lowell Fire, and Cedar Lake Fire were on scene aiding with the patients.
Two ambulances from Tri-Creek, Two from Cedar Lake, and one from St. John all transported patients, according to Kennedy. Crown Point Police assisted in clearing intersections for the ambulances rushing the children to the hospitals.

The driver of the eastbound vehicle faces a possible citation for failure to yield, Martinez stated.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Department Accident Reconstruction Unit is investigating the incident.
