Shriners Fire Truck Struck In Fatal Crash
Initial investigation shows that at approximately 2:08 PM, Saturday, an antique fire truck was traveling westbound on US Highway 20, approaching 520 when it crashed into a SUV.
The driver believed to be at fault was driving a Toyota Highlander and was southbound on 520 and stopped at the light prior to making a left/eastbound turn onto US 20, according to The Porter County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO).
Eastbound and Westbound traffic on US 20 have the right of way, PCSO said. The driver of the Highlander made a left turn into the path of the antique fire truck and was struck on the driver’s side. The Highlander caught on fire and courageous citizens stopped and assisted subjects out of the vehicle.
The Highlander had 5 occupants inside and the fire truck had 1 occupant. One of the passengers in the Highlander has unfortunately passed away, 3 others have been airlifted, and 1 was taken by ground EMS.
The driver of the fire truck was not transported for injuries.
Orak Shrine of Michigan City confirmed the fire truck was their truck saying, “Unfortunately, the fire truck was involved in an accident today as it was returning from the parade.”
Porter County Reconstruction is on-scene investigating and this area will be shutdown for the next few hours as of 4 PM.
