Single Vehicle Crash Sends Two To Hospital On I-94

This afternoon at approximately 4:53 p.m., Indiana State Troopers were called to investigate a single vehicle crash on I-94 at the 20.2 mile-marker, according to Sgt. Glen Fifield.  Preliminary investigation by Trooper Zachary Huston shows that a red 2001 Nissan Pathfinder was eastbound in the right lane when the vehicle drove off the roadway and into the south ditch.  The Nissan struck a tree head-on before coming to a rest, police said.  A passenger in the vehicle suffered severe injuries and was flown from the scene to the University of Chicago Hospital.

The driver, identified as Nathan W. Darling, 31, of Michigan City, IN, was transported to Porter Hospital for treatment.  While at the hospital the driver consented to a blood test.  Toxicology results are pending.  The driver was cited for Driving While Suspended (Prior Conviction) – Class A Misdemeanor.

Assisting at the scene:  Portage Fire Department, Burns Harbor Police, Hoosier Helpers and Joe’s Towing.   The right two lanes were closed for approximately 3 hours for scene investigation.

The charge listed above is merely an accusation and probable cause for arrest and any crime mentioned in this release is alleged.  Actual charges and/or additional charges will be determined by the Porter County Prosecutor’s Office.
