St. John Man Allegedly Fires Shots At Officer Leading To SWAT Callout

Tuesday evening around 9:10 PM, St. John Police officers were searching for a missing person in the 10300 block of Whitney Place, according to St John Police. While checking a large open field, an unknown male yelled at the officers and officers yelled back “St. John Police.” Officers observed a male at a residence with a porch light on and a dog present. At that time, officers heard 4-5 gunshots fired in their direction.

Cedar Lake Police responded to the scene and flew a police drone over the vicinity where the gunshots came from. As the drone was over the area, officers heard 15 more gunshots.

Multiple police agencies responded to assist and officers were able to locate a residence in the 7000 block of W. 101st Ave as the location where the gunshots originated. Numerous shell casings were located in the front yard of the residence.

Unable to get an answer at the door, Northwest Regional SWAT was called to the scene. Eventually, SWAT negotiators were able to convince the resident to exit the residence and he was subsequently taken into custody by St. John Police.

A search warrant was obtained and several firearms and a large amount of ammunition was taken from the home, police said.

The resident was taken to the Lake County Jail where he is being held on probable cause charges of criminal recklessness.

The case remains under investigation and the suspects name is being withheld until formal charges are filed. No one was injured in this incident.

St. John Police thanked all of the surrounding police agencies and the Northwest Regional SWAT Team for their quick response and assistance.
