Stolen Vehicle Pursuit Ends With Suspect Dead After Crash
On Wednesday, October 12, 2022 at 5:47 PM, a Lake Station License Plate Reader alerted the in car computers of a
stolen vehicle passing the cameras, according to Lake Station Police Chief James Richardson.
The said vehicle was located at Central Avenue and Ripley Street where a patrol Officer confirmed the U-Haul van was
reported as stolen on 10-05-2022 in Schererville.
The driver of the stolen U-Haul van fled from Officers and traveled westbound on the
Indiana Toll road with failed attempts of stop sticks deployments towards
Chicago. The stolen vehicle exited Cline Avenue and traveled thru East Chicago
and headed east bound on US 20 into Gary. The suspect swerved at an officer
outside his vehicle with stop sticks and continued eastbound in the westbound
lanes of US 20. While traveling the wrong way the fleeing stolen vehicle struck a vehicle traveling westbound
on US 20 & Jefferson Street. The driver of the stolen vehicle then struck a
Nipsco pole and a wooden porch flipping the stolen vehicle on its roof.
The driver of the stolen vehicle was pronounced deceased on scene and the other motorist was transported to the Hospital by Gary EMS. The deceased suspect has not been identified as of Thursday morning, check back for updates.
