Supplier Arrested After Overdose Death In Hammond
On January 19, 2023, at approximately 3:15 PM, Hammond Police were dispatched to the 7100 block of Harrison Ave. in responses to a death investigation. Upon arrival, officers discovered a 19-year-old male who had subsequently died. The Lake County Coroner stated that the death was due to fentanyl intoxication, according to Lt. Steve Kellogg.
After conducting a thorough investigation, Hammond Police Detectives have made an arrest of a 20-year-old male who is suspected of providing the victim with the narcotics that led to his death. Detectives have presented charges to the Lake County Prosecutor’s office for dealing a controlled substance resulting in death against the suspect who has been identified as Presley Martinez-DeYoung from Gary.
The death of this young man is a tragic reminder of the many people who lose their lives due to drug overdoses in our communities. Hammond Police Chief William Short stated “The tragedy of losing loved ones to addiction can never be overstated. Police departments are making significant efforts to pursue suspects who are responsible for the distribution of drugs that lead to overdoses. The fight against drugs is a difficult and on-going battle, but with continued efforts from law enforcement and community members, we can work towards reducing the number of lives lost to addiction.”
