Suspect in Custody Following Overnight Shooting in Chesterton
CHESTERTON — A male suspect is in custody following an overnight shooting that left a woman seriously injured early Saturday morning in Chesterton.
According to the Chesterton Police Department, officers were dispatched around 2:33 a.m. Saturday, December 27, 2025, to the 100 block of South 18th Street after receiving reports of a person who had been shot.
When officers arrived, along with deputies from the Porter County Sheriff’s Department, they located an adult female suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Police said the victim was alert and able to communicate with officers at the scene. She was transported to a regional trauma center, where she was listed in serious condition.
Investigators determined the shooting occurred inside a two-story, multi-unit residence in the same block. During the initial response, officers attempted to make contact with individuals inside the residence but were unsuccessful. Police reported observing lights being turned off on the second floor of the building.
Chesterton Police detectives and command staff responded to the scene, and Chief Tim Richardson requested assistance from the Porter County SWAT Team. Officers established and maintained a secure perimeter around the residence while awaiting SWAT’s arrival.

After a search warrant was authorized by Christopher Buckley of Porter County Superior Court #4, the Porter County SWAT Team made a tactical entry into the residence and took a male suspect into custody without incident. The suspect was later turned over to Chesterton Police detectives.
Multiple witnesses were also located and transported to the Chesterton Police Department for questioning.
Police said the suspect is currently being held on preliminary charges related to the incident. Formal charges will be determined following a review by Gary Germann and his staff, pending a finding of probable cause by a Porter County court.
Authorities emphasized that the investigation remains active and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Chief Richardson thanked Sheriff Jeff Balon and the Porter County Sheriff’s Department for their immediate response and continued assistance, including support from their SWAT and Crime Scene Investigation teams.
As a reminder, arrests and criminal charges are merely accusations, and all individuals are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
