Suspect In Custody From Pub Shooting

The Hammond Police Department has made an arrest in connection with the March 30, 2025, shooting at Portside Pub, located at 1516 Indianapolis Boulevard.

On the morning of the incident, officers responded at approximately 4:15 AM, to reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they discovered two individuals deceased and three others seriously injured. The shooting was initially believed to be domestic in nature, and detectives launched an immediate and thorough investigation.

The dispute is believed to have stemmed from a loss of approximately $7,000, the suspect Caprice Cashaw, had gambled at the Horseshoe leading to an argument in the car with his girlfriend. Cashaw blamed her for the loss. The couple had stopped outside the pub where a physical altercation continued after it had started in the car. His girlfriend was able to run away from the vehicle as multiple innocent bystanders from inside the bar came to the aid of her. Cashaw admitted to firing over 30 rounds at his girlfriend while knowlingly striking innocent people as she ran into the bar. As Cashaw left he fired one more additional fatal round at the last bystander outside the door of the bar before he fled the area.

As a result of that investigation, 31-year-old Caprice Edward Cashaw of Merrillville has been arrested and charged with multiple felonies, including murder and attempted murder. Each charge has been enhanced due to the use of a firearm during the commission of the crimes.

Cashaw is currently in custody with no bond.

According to court documents, three of gunshot victims remain hospitalized.

In 2022 Cashaw attempted to run over a Gaming Commission Agent but was only charged with criminal recklessness. His case is still being continued 3 years later, Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott said in a post. “Cashaw should have been sitting in jail last night from this incident,” McDermott added.

“This is a tragic situation that has deeply impacted several families in our community,” said Chief William Short. “Our hearts go out to the victims and their loved ones. While this arrest is a step toward justice, we recognize the pain and loss that cannot be undone. The Hammond Police Department remains committed to supporting the families affected and ensuring those responsible are held accountable.”
