Terre Haute Man Charged With Schererville Burglary
On September 1, 2024, Schererville Police Department was dispatched to the 500 block of Tiebel Drive in Schererville. The reporting party returned to their residence and discovered that the glass in their back sliding door was shattered. Inside, they discovered 2 safes were missing that contained firearms, as well as collectable coins, and various precious metals and other valuables. The total value of the missing items was in excess of $50,000. Surveillance cameras revealed that, earlier in the day, a male subject wearing a facial covering and a black hiking backpack entered the backyard of the victim’s residence through a gate. The male subject then smashes the glass to their back sliding door, and enters the residence.
According to court documents, on December 1, 2024, INDR Law Enforcement recovered one of the firearms that was reported stolen by the victim. The firearm was recovered in Terre Haute, IN. The person found in possession of the firearm stated that they received the stolen firearm from Geoffrey R Miller Jr.
Investigation into Miller revealed that he resided in Terre Haute and was also on probation for a burglary in Vigo County, Indiana. Additionally, it was discovered that victim from this burglary and Miller both belong to a Reddit forum website set up for the purpose of buying and selling precious metals.
On December 3, 2024, Miller was arrested for a probation violation while driving a 2015 Buick Enclave. Thereafter, a search was conducted of Geoffrey Miller Jr’s residence. The police located various items including numerous collectable coins, coin books, and a black hiking backpack containing a hammer. The backpack appeared to be the same backpack that was worn during the burglary of the Schererville residence.
According to court documents, the Buick Enclave was detected on multiple license plate readers at various locations in Lake County, Indiana, during late August and on the date of the burglary. Cell phone records also reveal that Geoffrey Miller Jr’s cell phone pinged on towers near the location of this burglary.
Miller is currently in custody in the Vigo County Jail.
