Three Juveniles Caught In Stolen Car After Short Pursuit

On February 17, 2021 approximately 11:04 PM Gary Police officers observed a black Toyota disregard the red light at 5th Ave and Grant Street, according to Lt. Dawn Westerfield of The Gary Police.

Officers got behind the vehicle and ran the plate only to discover the vehicle was listed as stolen out of Hammond Indiana, Westerfield said. The vehicle is believed to have been stolen January 21st. Officers then activated their emergency lights and siren in an attempt to curb the vehicle.  The vehicle stopped at 5th Ave and Fillmore St but the driver failed to comply with verbal commands given by officers. The driver then turned the vehicle lights off and fled from the traffic stop, Westerfield said. As the vehicle approached Virginia St it began to slow down, and officers were safely able to box the vehicle in and prevent it from fleeing.

Once stopped the three male juveniles were removed from the vehicle. The two 17-year-old passengers, both from Gary, were released to their parents on station. The 16-year-old driver from Gary was taken into custody pending charges.
