Two 13 Year Olds Shot In Hessville After Trick or Treating

The Hammond Police Department is saddened to announce the shooting of two 13-year-old boys in the city last night on Halloween. The shooting occurred in Hessville near the intersection of 167th & Nebraska near Phrommer Park around 7:30 PM.

Witnesses reported hearing several shots and then seeing a boy down near the park. A second victim was found a block away. After the initial shots numerous residents reported hearing even more shots fired as this investigation was ongoing. Those shots were not located.

This incident resulted in the death of one of the boys, Lt. Steve Kellogg stated. The name of the teen has not been released as of Monday morning. The other boy, who was shot in the leg, was treated at the hospital and released.

The nature of the incident is under investigation but a person of interest has been taken into custody for questioning, Kellogg said.

“While we are thankful for the community support which led to the arrest of the person of interest, we are heartbroken that such an event could even occur”, Hammond Police said. “Our hearts go out to the families of these boys,” Kellogg added.
