Two Confirmed Dead After Lake Village Tornado

LAKE VILLAGE — At least two people are dead after a powerful storm produced a tornado that tore through the small northwest Indiana community of Lake Village Tuesday evening, leaving a trail of destruction and prompting a major emergency response in Newton County.

Authorities say the tornado struck the area shortly before 7 p.m. Tuesday, damaging or destroying numerous homes and leaving residents trapped in debris as emergency crews rushed to conduct search-and-rescue operations.

According to officials, two people were killed when the storm struck their home, while several others were injured as the tornado moved through the community. The victims identities had not yet been released as of Wednesday morning pending family notification.

Emergency responders from multiple agencies worked overnight combing through heavily damaged neighborhoods. Officials reported collapsed homes, overturned structures, and widespread debris scattered across roads and fields. In some cases, residents had to be rescued from inside damaged houses.

The storm also knocked down dozens of utility poles, trees, and power lines, leaving thousands of customers without electricity across parts of Newton County and neighboring areas.

Local officials described the destruction as severe. One fire official said the scene resembled the kind of devastation typically seen in major tornado disasters, with entire homes reduced to piles of debris and livestock running loose in rural areas.

The National Weather Service is expected to conduct storm surveys to determine whether the damage was caused by a tornado and to assign an official rating. Meteorologists say the same powerful supercell thunderstorm that produced the Lake Village tornado also spawned several tornadoes across northern Illinois earlier in the evening.

Newton County Sheriff Shannon Cothran urged the public to stay away from the hardest-hit areas as crews continue recovery operations and clear debris from roadways.

The deadly storm was part of a widespread severe weather outbreak that stretched across the Midwest Tuesday, bringing tornadoes, damaging winds, and extremely large hail to parts of Illinois and Indiana.

Authorities say search efforts and damage assessments remain ongoing as crews work to determine the full extent of the destruction left behind by the storm.
