Two Deaths In Porter County Attributed To Rough Waters
On Sunday August 16, 2020 at 11:57 PM, The Porter County Coroner’s Office was paged to Porter Regional Hospital regarding a death in the ICU. Upon arrival the Coroner’s Office was informed that the decedent, identified as 21-year-old Moath Nagi of Rockford,IL, was transported from Porter Beach to Porter Regional Hospital earlier in the afternoon and was rescued after being underwater for an extended period of time.
On Monday, August 17, 2020 at 10:52 AM, The Porter County Coroner’s Office was dispatched to the Portage Lakefront regarding a body being recovered from Lake Michigan. The decedent was identified as 16-year-old Mohamed Obied, of Bridgeview, IL, who was reported missing on Sunday, August 16, 2020 at 10:47 AM, according to The Porter County Coroner’s Office. Mohamed was one of a group of five swimmers who were struggling with the rough waters of Lake Michigan on Sunday at the Portage Lakefront. Indiana Conservation Officer Tyler Brock told RNS that the strong rip tide swept the group out in waist deep water. The National Weather Service Chicago did have Beach Hazard Statements out for all of NWI stressing individuals to stay out of the water.
