Two East Chicago Residents Face Felony Charges Following Gun Pursuit
Two East Chicago residents are facing felony charges after police reported recovering multiple firearms, including one modified for automatic fire, during a September 18, 2025, pursuit.
According to court documents, officers were dispatched around 12:41 p.m. to Guthrie Street and Main Street in East Chicago after reports of suspicious individuals with firearms concealed under their clothing. Officers stated they observed two masked subjects in an alley. One subject allegedly handed a handgun with a drum magazine to the other before both fled the area.
Police reported that one individual, identified as Dashiae Carlette Marquita Williams, was detained shortly after the pursuit began. The second subject, identified as Dashawn L. Smith, ran from officers while carrying firearms. Officers stated they saw him discard one handgun before continuing to flee with another. Smith was ultimately apprehended, and police recovered two firearms:
• A Glock 21 .45 caliber handgun with an extended magazine.
• A Glock 22 .40 caliber handgun with a drum magazine that had been modified with a device known as a “Glock Switch,” making it capable of fully automatic fire.
During recorded interviews, Smith admitted carrying both handguns and claimed Williams had passed him one of the weapons when police arrived. Williams initially denied possessing the second firearm but later stated she had considered harming herself with it before the incident. She was transported to St. Catherine Hospital under an emergency detention order following her admission.
