Two Injured, Dog Rescued in Late-Night House Fire on North Grant Street
Two residents were injured and a family dog was rescued following a late-night house fire Monday in Crown Point, according to information released by the Crown Point Fire Department.
At approximately 9:21 p.m., Lake County 911 received multiple calls reporting a residential structure fire with possible entrapment in the 100 block of North Grant Street. Police officers arrived first on scene and were able to rescue one of two occupants from the rear of the home.
Fire crews arrived within two minutes, immediately began life-saving care, and transported the rescued occupant to Franciscan Health Crown Point, where the individual was listed in serious but stable condition. The patient was later transferred to a burn center in Chicago for further treatment.
The second occupant sustained less serious injuries and was transported in good condition. Firefighters also rescued the family dog, which did not suffer any significant injuries.
Crews faced challenging conditions while battling the fire in an older, balloon-frame home amid extremely cold temperatures. While fire on the first and second floors was brought under control quickly, access to the attic proved difficult due to multiple additions to the structure and stored contents. The fire ultimately broke through the roof, requiring the use of a tower ladder to extinguish remaining flames that could not be reached from inside the home.
Because of the cold weather and operational demands of the incident, the response was upgraded to a second alarm to bring in additional personnel.
The Crown Point Fire Department acknowledged assistance from numerous mutual aid partners, including Cedar Lake, Dyer, Four Seasons, Gary, Hobart, Lake Hills, Lowell, Merrillville, Schererville, St. John, Tri-Creek EMS, and Superior EMS.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
