Two Juveniles In Custody For The Murder Of Retired Gary Firefighter

Saturday morning around 7:30 AM Gary Police say an attempted personal robbery took place at the Clark Gas Station located at 2295 Grant St. Gary resident Wallace Broadnax,70, was outside when a suspect(s) ran up to him attempting to rob him. Shots were fired by the suspects during the incident ultimately killing Broadnax.

“I am heartbroken and disgusted by the senseless brutality that took the life of Wallace Broadnax, a dedicated, lifelong member of our community,” Gary Mayor Jerome Prince said Sunday. “I have reached out to the family and loved ones of Mr. Broadnax, and the City of Gary stands ready to support them in any way we can,” Prince added.

Wallace Broadnax is a retired 25 year veteran of The Gary Fire Department and a great friend to many across the city.

Early Sunday morning a search warrant was issued on a residence and police took two juveniles into custody concerning this homicide near 21st and Grant. Further information is planned to be released Monday afternoon at a conference with Gary Police Chief Brian Evans, Mayor Prince, Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr, and Lake County Prosecutor Bernard Carter.

“I thank the Metro Homicide Unit, a collaborative team of officers from the Gary Police Department and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, for their rapid and diligent investigation, Prince said Sunday. Because the two suspects in custody are juveniles, we will limit the amount of information we release. The Metro Homicide Unit will continue its investigation to gather every detail related to this case. I expect more actions based on their investigation,” Prince stated.

“As I said last week, violence in our communities is a public health crisis, but, we will not tolerate this violence. We will do everything in our power to bring the responsible parties to justice,” Prince stated.
