Two Kids One Adult Killed After CSX Train Hits Vehicle
Three people killed, including two children, early Tuesday morning when a CSX train struck their vehicle after driving around the gates in the Miller section of Gary, according to police.
Gary Police & Fire responded around 7:20 AM Tuesday to the Howard Street crossing in Miller for a vehicle struck by a train. On arrival police found three people ejected from a heavily damaged car. All three were pronounced deceased on scene.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office has identified the victims as Shermika Herbert 37 of Gary, Deyki Mitchell, 13, of Gary, and Deniya Brown, 11 of Gary.
“We all are saddened when we lose any of our friends and neighbors, but it’s especially painful when we lose multiple members of a family, including young ones,” Gary Mayor Jerome Prince said Tuesday.
“We lost several members of a family in a train-car collision this morning. At this point, details are limited as different law enforcement agencies and the CSX railroad continue investigating this incident,” Prince said.
“Whatever the outcomes of these investigations, I implore every resident and visitor to be extra cautious when using every railroad crossing and please respect crossing gates and safety devices throughout our city.”
