Two Ohio Residents Arrested for Shoplifting at Dick’s Sporting Goods in Hobart Using Baby Stroller
Two individuals from Ohio were arrested on April 11, 2025, following a shoplifting incident at the Dick’s Sporting Goods store located at 2644 E 79th Avenue in Hobart.
According to an affidavit, officers responded to a call at approximately 8:42 p.m. regarding a male and female suspect reportedly removing security sensors from merchandise and attempting to exit the store with stolen goods. The suspects were described as a Black female wearing a salmon-colored shirt and a Black male in a gray Nike Tech top, pushing a stroller.
Upon arrival, officers met with a Reserve Officer who had already encountered the suspects outside the store. The pair matched the description and were brought back inside. The suspects were later identified as Jaymee Smith (born 11/07/1987) and Tirrell Davis (born 03/10/1988), both of whom claimed to be from Ohio and stated they did not have identification on them.
During the investigation, Jaymee claimed there was a child in the stroller, giving the name and birthdate of an infant. However, officers discovered there was no child in the stroller or their vehicle. Surveillance footage reviewed showed Tirrell Davis using a silver magnetic device to remove security sensors from items in the Nike section of the store. He then passed the items to Jaymee, who concealed them in the stroller under a blanket.
The footage further showed the suspects exiting the store at 8:44 p.m. before returning one minute later upon seeing police on scene. Jaymee re-entered the store and placed the stolen merchandise on the floor near the aisle before officers questioned them.
Employees confirmed witnessing the theft and identified the suspects. The employee provided a detailed receipt for the stolen merchandise, which totaled approximately $910.00 before taxes. Items included several Nike hoodies, shirts, and other apparel.
Officers were given consent to search the couple’s Hyundai Santa Fe, bearing Colorado plates. Inside, they found numerous clothing items with tags and hangers still attached, but no shopping bags or receipts. The silver magnetic device used to remove the tags was also recovered and placed into evidence.
Tirrell Davis and Jaymee Smith were arrested and charged with theft.
