One Shot & One Dead At Gary Funeral
On November 13, 2021, at approximately 2:19 PM, the Gary Police Department received a call for service reference a male shot in the 600 block of Rhode Island Street, Gary, Indiana, according to Gary Police Commander Jack Hamady.
While officers were in route to the location a second call came in reference possible second male shot as well.
Officers arrived on scene and located an adult male unresponsive outside the church. While officers were securing the scene they located a second adult male inside the church who had sustained a gunshot wound, Hamady stated.
Gary Fire Department & Elite Ambulance arrived on scene and transported both gunshot wound victims to Methodist Northlake for their injuries.
A 41 year old male victim from Gary, Indiana succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The Lake County Coroner has identified the male as Degerie Scott of Gary. The second gunshot victim is a 41 year old male from Merrillville, Indiana. This victim is in stable condition.
The victims along with other individuals were at the church for a funeral. As the funeral was letting out an unidentified light skin black male began shooting into the crowd, Hamady told RNS. That individual fled on foot.
“On behalf of my family and our city, our hearts and prayers go out to every person who was affected by today’s violent act outside of St. Monica and Luke Church,” Mayor Jerome Prince stated. “It is beyond comprehension how anyone can attack a family already in mourning.” “We will find whoever is responsible for this cowardly act and prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law,” Prince stated.
