Two Teens Report Being Shot In Chesterton Turns Out To Be Accident
Around 11:30PM Saturday night, a Chesterton Police Officer on patrol was approached by a 19 year old and 17 year old male on the 1100 block of Broadway in Chesterton, according to Chesterton Police Chief David Cincoski. The 19 year old told the officer he was shot near 15th & Broadway by unknown male assailant Cincoski stated. The male was treated at the scene till medical emergency personal arrived to transport him to a local hospital.
During the course of the investigation the 19 year old male changed his story numerous times and exaggerated his account of the story, police said. The 17 year old male with the victim refused to cooperate with police during the investigation. A search warrant was obtained for the 19 year old’s home located on the 1600 block of Broadway in Chesterton. Numerous items were removed from the home by police for evidentiary purposes, Cincoski said. The victim was taken back to his home by police from the hospital during this investigation.
On Sunday in the morning hours Police told RNS the 19 year old teen recanted his accounts of the previous evening events. The incident is now being handled as an accidental shooting due to the statements saying he accidentally shot himself in the upper leg with what he thought was an unloaded hand gun, police said. The handgun was recovered and is now in police custody, Cincoski said. The 19 year old has been identified as Isiah Wichter.
