Update to Schererville Shooting ; Suspect Remains At Large and Wanted
On November 30, 2024 at approximately 3:48 AM, Schererville Police & Fire were dispatched to the 2600 block of Morningside Dr in regards to an assault with a firearm, according to Schererville Police. Officers were advised by dispatch that a male teen had been shot in the stomach and leg. The victim was located in a residence and transported to a local hospital but was later transported to a Chicago hospital due to the severity of his injuries.
Family of the victim has come out publicly and stated the victim, 18-year-old, Joshua Eberly bravely tried to protect his mother’s home during a terrifying robbery. In the process, he was shot three times, sustaining life-threatening injuries. Joshua lost a kidney, suffered lacerations to his liver, and endured spinal damage that has left him uncertain if he will walk again.
The suspect now identified as 19 year old, Shamarian Haywood of Gary remains at large. According to court documents Haywood woke Joshua up next to his bed holding a compact rifle while ordering him to hand over his PlayStation and watch. Joshua refused to give up his belongings and a struggle ensued where Joshua was shot 3 times. Haywood then grabbed the items and fled the scene.
Haywood has since been charged with attempted murder, robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, armed robbery, aggravated battery, battery by means of a deadly weapon and battery resulting in serious bodily injury. Haywood has multiple older warrants for Unlawful carrying of a handgun by a felon, resisting law enforcement, and felony burglary.
Prior to the incident Joshua was excelling as a talented athlete and preparing to enlist in the U.S. Army after graduating high school, family said. A Go Fund Me was setup for Medical expenses, including surgeries, spinal rehabilitation, and physical therapy. Accessible equipment to support his mobility during recovery is also needed.
