Uptick In Gun Violence This Week In Michigan City

The increase in gun violence within Michigan City continues as MCPD is investigating four shooting cases in recent days, Police said Thursday.

On Saturday August 29th at approximately 10:25 P.M., Officers in the parking lot of MCPD heard several shots being fired in the neighborhood north of the police station. While enroute to the area, 911 calls reporting shots being fired in the 300 Block of Springland Avenue were answered by the La Porte County Regional Dispatch Center.
Once in the area, Officers located an 18-year-old male that had crashed his vehicle into a garage in the 400 Block of Springland Avenue. Officers spoke with witnesses and collected evidence that included several spent shell casings. The male subject at the scene indicated that he had just left a gas station and while in the area of Fir Street / School Street, a vehicle approached his and began shooting at him. The male subject crashed attempting to flee from the suspects. No injuries were reported during this incident.


On Sunday August 30th at approximately 1:34 A.M., Officers were dispatched to the 800 Block of Main Street for shots being fired. Officers located a residence that sustained damage from gunfire. Officers spoke with witnesses and collected spent shell casings. No injuries were reported during this incident.

On the same date at approximately 9:23 P.M., Officers in the parking lot of MCPD heard several shots being fired in the neighborhood north of the police station. While enroute to the area, 911 calls reporting shots being fired in the 300 Block of Walker Street were answered by the La Porte County Regional Dispatch Center. Officers spoke with witnesses and collected spent shell casings. No injuries were reporting during this incident.


On Tuesday September 1st at approximately 4:00 P.M., Officers were dispatched to the 200 Block of Fir Street in reference to shots being fired. Upon their arrival, Officers located vehicles that had been damaged by suspected gunfire. Officers spoke with witnesses and collected spent shell casings. While on scene, Officers were dispatched to Franciscan Hospital for two male subjects that had been dropped off at the emergency room with gunshot wounds. The victims, a 22-year-old male and 20-year-old male, were treated for non-life-threatening gunshot wounds to their lower extremities and buttocks.

MCPD is still working out the details of each of these incidents and it is unknown at this time if any are related. No suspects are currently in custody.
