Valpo Man Dies After Hobart Bike Accident

On September 24, 2020, Hobart Police Officers were dispatched to the area of 34th Avenue and North Hobart Road with regard to a motorcycle that had been rear-ended by a van, according to Captain James Gonzales of The Hobart Police. The responding Officer arrived on scene and met with the driver of 2014 White colored GMC Savannah van, who told him that he was traveling northbound on North Hobart Road/ Rt. 51 at approximately 35 miles an hour. The driver told the Officer that he didn’t notice that the motorcycle or the traffic in front of him had come to a stop and as he attempted to brake, he struck the rear end of the motorcycle. The Officer also spoke with additional witness, one witness told the Officer that it didn’t appear that the driver of the van even slowed down when he struck the rear of the motorcycle.

The driver of the 2012 Harley Davidson motorcycle was transported to an area hospital for treatment and subsequently succumb to his injuries. The driver of the motorcycle was identified as a 57 year old male from Valparaiso. The driver of the van was identified as a 58 year old male from Cicero, Illinois.

It is important that we are aware of the motorists in front of us as we drive, especially people who are operating motorcycles, because they are more difficult to see and they don’t have the same protections as people do driving a vehicle, Gonzales said. Please remember to follow posted speed limit signs and obey posted warning signs.

At this time there isn’t any indication that drugs, alcohol or technology distraction played a factor with the crash. The case is still under investigation by the Hobart Police Department.
