Wednesday night a prayer vigil was held for missing 12-year-old Kyrin Carter at the Best Western on 179th in Hammond. Pink balloons lined the search area and street in hopes Kyrin would follow them back to the hotel where hundreds of friends, family, and concerned residents came together as one.
Kyrin Carter who is from Kansas City was in town with family for a wedding. While grandma was staying in the Best Western room with Kyrin he left out the backdoor of the motel on foot around 12:30 p.m.. The hotel camera shows Kyrin running towards the Little Calumet River behind the hotel alone until he was out of camera range. No other neighboring cameras captured Kyrin that afternoon. K9’s tracked a scent to the river before losing it near the bank. Family told RNS Kyrin did attempt to go near the water one earlier time Saturday but turned around because of the rough rocks on the levee hurting his feet.
Kyrin is described as being 5 feet 4 inches tall, 130 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. Kyrin was wearing dark blue shorts with a light blue stripe and a blue short sleeve shirt. He was not wearing shoes. The family said Kyrin may have been upset about not stopping for chicken nuggets prior to him leaving.
Multiple teams, agencies and volunteers have scoured the area daily with no clues on his whereabouts. Specialized dogs were brought in Sunday & Monday that can detect scent through water but that yielded only a few hits. When divers were called in they were not able to find anything. Mutiple runs of drones and helicopters also netted no results. The terrain in this area is really worse case scenario in the City of Hammond for a search with all the wetlands, swamp, river, and vegetation. The river is also 6-14ft deep in this section of the Little Calumet which is very wide compared to other locations. There is a steep embankment on the opposite side of the river where it is believed he could not climb to get the wetlands. Currently the main focus is a portion of the Little Calumet River according to Police.
Family thanked all those continuing to help and offer assistance Wednesday night and stated no one here is going to give up on Kyrin. Bishop Grant from Chicago lead the vigil in prayer and Amazing Grace as family spoke and pleaded for any assistance.
