Wheeler High School Threat Deemed Not Credible; Homecoming Events Canceled Out of Caution

Porter County – The Porter County Sheriff’s Department confirmed Friday that an alleged threat reported at Wheeler High School was thoroughly investigated and determined to be not credible.

School Resource Officers began looking into the matter earlier in the day after the threat surfaced. While deputies found no danger to students or staff, a full report was taken, and the situation will continue to be monitored in case of further developments.

The Union Township School Corporation (UTSC) issued a statement to families and staff, reiterating law enforcement’s findings and outlining steps taken to address the incident. According to Superintendent Leigh Barnes, all students rumored to be involved were interviewed directly by the Sheriff’s Department, their families contacted, and deputies even visited their homes to ensure a thorough investigation.

Out of an abundance of caution, however, UTSC officials announced the cancellation of Friday evening’s Homecoming Parade and Football Game as well as the Saturday Homecoming Dance.

“We recognize how meaningful the Homecoming events are for our students and families, and we sincerely apologize for the disappointment this causes,” Superintendent Barnes said in the release. “Please know that we are committed to working with our staff and students to create a plan to reschedule the parade, football game, and dance so that our Bearcat community can still enjoy a memorable and exciting Homecoming experience.”

Both the Sheriff’s Department and UTSC thanked the community for their support and patience as they placed safety first. New dates for the rescheduled Homecoming events are expected to be shared once finalized.
