Whiting Garage Fire Quickly Spreads To Homes

Shortly after 4 PM, Monday, Whiting Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire in the 1800 block of Oliver involving a garage. 

On arrival, crews found a fully engulfed garage with a vehicle on fire in the alley. Within 10 minutes of the initial fire call two adjacent structures caught on fire. Within 20 minutes firefighters were battling 2 houses and 4 garages on fire. As of 5:30 PM the fires are under control and crews are working hotspots. Two other adjacent homes sustained damage to siding.

One person was transported for injuries, according to Whiting Fire Chief Don Harbin. They were later transferred to a Chicago hospital.

Mutual Aid from across Lake County came to the assistance of Whiting, including East Chicago, Hammond, BP, Munster, Highland, and other surrounding  agencies. The Red Cross is enroute as well to lend assistance.
