Whiting Man Charged with Burglary and Auto Theft After Hammond Incident

According to court documents, Casey Arthur Doll entered a residence in the 3200 block of 176th Street in Hammond around 12:45 p.m. on July 4. The homeowner told police she was showering when she heard someone enter through her unlocked front door. She encountered a sweating man wearing a white shirt, shorts, and a red backpack, who claimed to be in the wrong house.

After asking to borrow her vehicle several times, the man allegedly rifled through her purse looking for keys. When the homeowner grabbed her keys from a hook, a spare key to her 2014 gray Toyota Camry fell to the floor. The suspect grabbed it, fled the residence, and stole the car from her driveway.

The woman told police she did not know the man and had never given anyone permission to take her vehicle.

Police quickly launched an investigation and, using body camera footage, city surveillance, and neighborhood security video, identified the suspect as Casey Doll. He was reportedly captured on a Hammond traffic camera shortly before the burglary and had been recognized by detectives from prior encounters.

License plate readers tracked the stolen Toyota traveling west on I-80/94 shortly after the theft. The vehicle was later located by Markham, Illinois police, who arrested a man inside after a brief identity deception. The suspect initially gave officers a false name but was ultimately confirmed to be Doll by investigators.

The stolen vehicle was recovered and towed back to Hammond for processing. Doll was taken into custody on an active felony warrant and remains held in Illinois awaiting extradition.

Doll was charged on July 5, 2025, with the following offenses:

    •    Burglary of a dwelling – Level 4 Felony

    •    Auto theft (theft of a motor vehicle) – Level 6 Felony
