Wisconsin Man Charged After Traffic Stop in Gary Leads to Seizure of Stolen Gun and 31 Grams of Ecstasy
Gary- A 46-year-old Wisconsin man, Shamaine Kent Easley, has been charged in Lake County,after sheriff’s deputies found a stolen handgun and more than 31 grams of MDMA (Ecstasy) during a traffic stop in Gary.
According to court documents, a Lake County Sheriff’s deputy stopped a Chevy Tahoe around 25th Avenue and Massachusetts Street in Gary on November 4, 2025, after observing it fail to stop at two intersections and noting that one of its license plate lights was inoperable.
The deputy reported smelling burnt marijuana coming from the vehicle. Easley allegedly told the officer that he had “just finished smoking a blunt” and produced the burnt end from the console. During a search of the vehicle, officers found a Smith & Wesson handgun in the center console along with a baggie containing colorful pills.
Police reported that the pills weighed 31 grams and field-tested positive for MDMA (Ecstasy) — an amount considered possession with intent to deliver under Indiana law. The handgun was later confirmed stolen in a report from the Gary Police Department, which had taken a theft report from the owner in December 2024 .
Easley denied knowledge of both the gun and the pills but admitted he had been driving the Tahoe for several months. The passenger also denied ownership of the items.
A criminal history check showed Easley was previously convicted of Possession of a Controlled Substance (Felony) in Lake County, Waukegan, Illinois, in 2011, making him prohibited from carrying a firearm under Indiana law .

• Dealing in a Controlled Substance (MDMA, 10+ grams) — Level 2 Felony
• Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon — Level 4 Felony
• Possession of a Stolen Firearm — Level 5 Felony
• Possession of Marijuana — Class B Misdemeanor
