Woman Rescued After Vehicle Rolls Down Embankment

Liberty firefighters were called to respond to the area of State Road 49 and U.S. Highway 6 for reports of a motor vehicle crash sending one vehicle down the steep embankment of South bound State Road 49 shortly after 12:30 PM, Wednesday, February 10, 2021.

An East bound traveling vehicle on U.S. Highway 6 struck a guardrail head-on for unknown reasons sending the SUV down the steep embankment causing the vehicle to roll an unknown amount of times trapping one female patient inside the vehicle.

Area fire units from South Haven and Kouts Fire Department were in the area at the hospital when the call was broadcasted and responded to assist in locating the crash. Assistant Fire Chief Michael Wineland responding, requested for assistance from Washington Township and Chesterton Fire Department for manpower when information was received of the vehicle partially on its roof with a patient still trapped inside.
Stabilization of the vehicle had to be used to prevent the vehicle from moving while firefighters performed extrication on the vehicle to extricate the patient out of the vehicle. The patient was safely removed and transported up the embankment with the use of ropes on a stokes medical basket and firefighter personnel.
