Young Hammond Woman Killed in Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-80 in Gary
GARY — A 21-year-old Hammond woman was killed Tuesday morning following a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 80 / 94 near Cline Avenue, authorities said Tuesday.
According to the Indiana State Police, the crash occurred around 10:45 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of I-80 near the 6.4 mile-marker, approximately a mile east of Cline Avenue.
An investigation by Indiana State Trooper Regen Smith found that a white sedan was changing lanes in front of a semi-tractor trailer when the rear left side of the car struck the front right side of the semi. The impact caused the sedan to spin out and collide with the concrete median barrier before bouncing back into traffic and being struck by another sedan and a second semi in a T-bone collision.
After the crash, the driver of the white sedan was found unresponsive. One of the other motorists involved began performing CPR, which was continued by Trooper Smith upon arrival. Smith also deployed an automated external defibrillator (AED) until paramedics took over. The driver later passed at Northlake Methodist.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as Demilade Adeyeye, 21, of Hammond. Adeyeye was transported to Northlake Methodist Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased at 11:40 a.m.
An autopsy will be performed Wednesday at the Lake County Forensic Center in Crown Point. The coroner listed the cause of death as blunt-force injuries and the manner of death as an accident.
The crash caused major traffic backups along eastbound I-80 for several hours as state police and emergency crews worked the scene and cleared debris.
