Lyft Driver Calls About Suspicious Dodge Which Leads To Pursuit

On February 9, 2021 approximately 9:00 PM Gary Police Officers were dispatched to the 4300 block of West 24th Avenue to speak to a Lyft driver who had called in about a white passenger vehicle circling her car and she was afraid of being robbed, according to Lt. Dawn Westerfield of The Gary Police.

Prior to police arrival the Lyft Driver stated the white vehicle left the area and she was going to a different location to speak with officers. While on patrol a Gary Officer was traveling southbound on Burr Street when he observed a white Dodge Charger traveling at a high rate of speed westbound on 15th Avenue. Although the officer had the green light at the intersection, he slowed his vehicle at the white Charger went into the eastbound lanes and through the red light, Westerfield said.

The officer activated his emergency lights and siren in an attempt to stop the Charger. The vehicle refused to stop and fled at a high rate of speed into Hammond and then East Chicago.

The vehicle was discovered in an alley in East Chicago with the driver exiting and attempting to flee on foot, Westerfield said. The suspect was taken into custody at that time. The driver was discovered to be a 30-year-old male black from East Chicago whose residence was in the vicinity of where he stopped the vehicle. The vehicle is registered to the address the suspect resides in but is not registered to him, police said. Multiple charges are pending.
