Lake Claims Life Of 20 Year Old Bensenville Man
At approximately 5:00 p.m., a Gary Parks Department lifeguard at Lake Street Beach observed two adult males struggling in the water several hundred yards from her location, according to Indiana Conservation Officers.
The lifeguard rescued one man. The other, a 20 year-old man from Bensenville, Illinois, slipped underneath the water and did not resurface, officials said.
Emergency personnel were immediately notified, and a search was initiated. Emergency responders from multiple agencies searched the water utilizing divers, sonar, and helicopters.
At approximately 8:00 p.m., the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit spotted the man’s body below the surface of the water. Divers from the multiagency Lake County Dive Team were notified and recovered the victim in approximately 7 feet of water.
Indiana Conservation Officers and the Lake County Coroner’s office are currently investigating the incident. The Lake County Coroner has identified the victim as Julio Cesar Ramos, 20, of Bensenville, IL.
Indiana Conservation Officers were assisted by Gary Police Department, Gary Fire Department, Gary Parks Department lifeguards, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit, Aviation Unit, and Dive Unit, the United States Coast Guard, Indiana State Police and the Merrillville, Cedar Lake, and Crown Point Fire Departments as part of the Lake County Dive Team.
