Gary Man Charged With Multiple Felonies After Shooting Gary Police Sergeant
A Gary man has been formally charged Wednesday by The Lake County Prosecutor in the shooting of a Gary Police Sergeant Monday afternoon. The shooter was identified as Kameron Tremar Cooks Jr.
Cooks has been charged with (F) Attempt Murder, (F) Aggravated Battery When The Assault Poses A Substantial Risk Of Death, Two Counts of (F) Resisting Law Enforcement while drawing a weapon, (M) Striking A Law Enforcement Animal, and (M) Resisting Law Enforcement.
On Monday February 7, 2022 around 12:57 PM Gary Detective Sergeant William Fazekas was in the area of 4th Ave and Johnson Street when he observed a vehicle drive recklessly towards a third unknown party that was on 4th Ave. Sgt. Fazekas followed the vehicle to see the intentions of the driver and that is when the vehicle came to a stop in the 400 block of Johnson Street in Gary, according to Gary Police Commander Jack Hamady.
Sgt. Fazekas in a Gary Police Department police vehicle activated his lights and began to exit the vehicle to investigate. As Sgt Fazekas exited the police vehicle, is when he was ambushed by a barrage of gunfire from an AK Style Pistol. 21 rounds hit the police car and two rounds struck the Sergeant. Sgt Fazekas took cover inside the vehicle, but unfortunately was struck by gun fire in his shoulder. Cooks continued to fire upon Sgt Fazekas and later fled the area on foot.
Cooks was later found in an abandoned home by a K9 during an area manhunt utilizing multi agencies and federal officers. A 9mm Glock handgun with an extended magazine and modified switch on it to make it a machine gun was thrown nearby then recovered.

Cooks social media page shows him flaunting numerous guns including the two found on him Monday. A post by Cooks hours before the shooting on Facebook stated ”Bounce right out with that bird like do we have a problem officer?” Bird is slang for gun.
