Wanted Man Apprehended After Merrillville Pursuit

On Wednesday, February 9, 2022 at approximately 12:07 AM, a Merrillville Police Officer on routine patrol in the 6100 Block of Broadway observed a vehicle that appeared to be suspicious at a local business, according to Merrillville Assistant Chief Kosta Nuses.  The officer did a computer check on the vehicle’s registration plate which resulted in a return of local information, indicating this vehicle was involved in previous criminal activity but had fled from police.

The officer then followed the vehicle, where he observed the vehicle violate several traffic laws, Nuses stated.  A traffic stop was initiated and the vehicle was curbed.  The officer attempted to make contact with the driver but he subsequently fled, which initiated a pursuit, Nuses said.

Merrillville officers were quickly assisted by Lake County Sheriff’s Department Officers and their High Crimes Unit.  A PIT maneuver was executed by the Lake County Sheriff’s Officers, causing the suspect vehicle to quickly become immobilized in the 4700 Block of Rutledge in Gary.  The driver then fled on foot but was later tracked and apprehended by a Lake County K9.

Once in custody, it was determined that the fleeing suspect had two active felony warrants. The name of the suspect will be updated tomorrow once charges are approved. Check back for updates.
