Lavatta Curry Meeks, of East Chicago; Vivian McSpadden, of Hobart; and Omya Ashanti McSpadden, of Houston, Texas, are facing multiple felony charges after prosecutors allege they participated in a violent altercation with security guards at End Zone in the 300 block of Main Street during the early morning hours of Aug. 2. Investigators allege two security guards were assaulted, pepper sprayed, and suffered injuries while attempting to remove the group from the bar.
According to court documents, Hobart police were dispatched to the bar at approximately 1:45 a.m. after receiving reports of a large fight. When officers arrived, they found one of the bar’s security guards kneeling on the sidewalk holding his face in pain. His shirt had been ripped during the confrontation, and he told officers he had been pepper sprayed and beaten by several women. Because the crowd remained disorderly and aggressive, medics were initially unable to safely reach the injured security guard.
Investigators allege the incident began after a group of women repeatedly attempted to enter the men’s restroom to confront a man inside the establishment. According to the affidavit, security guards repeatedly instructed the group to back away and leave the restroom area, but the women allegedly ignored those commands and attempted to push past security. Security personnel then began escorting the group toward the south exit of the business.
One security guard told investigators that as the women were being removed from the bar, Lavatta Meeks allegedly struck him in the head with a closed fist while other members of the group also began throwing punches. Investigators said another security guard joined in an effort to help escort the women outside, where the confrontation escalated further.
According to police, Omya McSpadden then allegedly produced a canister of pepper spray and sprayed both security guards directly in the face. Officers later observed both guards with bloodshot, watery eyes and difficulty seeing, injuries investigators said were consistent with exposure to pepper spray. One security guard also reported his glasses were knocked from his face and broken during the altercation.
Court documents state that even after officers arrived, tensions remained high. While police attempted to separate those involved and restore order, investigators allege Omya McSpadden pointed toward one of the security guards and loudly yelled, “If I had a gun, I would have shot you,” before she was taken into custody.
Police said Vivian McSpadden remained at the scene and initially refused to identify herself after officers questioned her about the incident. According to investigators, she later admitted she had used her sister’s U.S. passport to gain entry into the bar because she was only 19 years old. Court documents state she also admitted consuming alcoholic beverages inside the establishment and submitted to a preliminary breath test that registered a BrAC of 0.087.
Investigators also allege Lavatta Meeks interfered with officers while they attempted to arrest Vivian McSpadden. According to the affidavit, Meeks ignored repeated commands to stay back, stood directly against an officer, refused commands to place her hands behind her back, and later refused repeated orders to enter a police vehicle until officers used force to seat her inside.
The probable cause affidavit alleges all three women were inside the bar before the altercation began and that investigators reviewed witness statements, surveillance footage, and officers’ reports.
