Jon Davis, 43, of Crete, Illinois, has been charged in Schererville Town Court after police allege he assaulted a utility worker in an active construction zone, threatened workers, ran across U.S. 41, and climbed a barbed-wire fence before officers found him hiding in a wooded area.

According to court documents, Schererville police responded at approximately 10:27 p.m. on Aug. 3 to Raising Cane’s Chicken in the 700 block of Indianapolis Boulevard after receiving a report that an intoxicated man had struck a NIPSCO employee before fleeing across U.S. 41 into a fenced property.

Police said officers located Davis sitting in a wooded area after a search. Investigators reported he had slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, smelled strongly of alcohol, and was unsteady on his feet, requiring officers to support him while walking him back to a patrol vehicle. Officers also observed cuts on his hands that they believed were sustained while climbing over barbed wire.

According to the affidavit, utility workers told police Davis wandered into the active construction zone, began knocking on work trucks, appeared highly intoxicated, and became argumentative when workers told him to leave. Investigators allege Davis struck one worker several times in the face, attempted to strike another worker, threatened employees, and continued yelling and cursing as 911 was called.

Police said Davis then ran across multiple lanes of U.S. 41 in the dark before climbing a chain-link fence topped with barbed wire into a posted no-trespassing area, where officers later found him. Investigators allege his actions created a substantial risk of bodily injury to himself and others.

Lodged in the Lake County Jail.
