The Lake County Sheriff Dive Team reminded everyone Tuesday night that water safety should always be respected. With the temps and winds always changing in NWI it causes rapid changes in water conditions. Please know your limitations. Always wear a lifevest or flotation device, never swim alone. Children should always be supervised don’t assume they know how to handle themselves it takes only a split second for something to happen.
If caught in a rip current that is pulling you away from the shore it is important to fight the natural instinct to try and swim back, instead remember to follow the 3 F’s, FLIP, FLOAT, FOLLOW. Flip onto your back and float, catch your breath and call for help. Then swim parallel with the shore and out of the rip current. After swimming away from the current you can then swim back to the shore.
As a reminder the Lake County Sheriff’s Department Dive Team is available for water safety presentations to anyone upon request, you can message their page Lake County Sheriff’s Department Underwater Search and Rescue or contact the Lake County Sheriff’s Department to schedule a presentation.
