On August 13th at approximately 7:30 pm, The Lake County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a structure fire in the 9000 block of Lee Place that resulted in one person suffering serious burn injuries.
According to preliminary information, a husband, wife, and their two adult children safely exited the residence. The husband sustained second-degree burns after a gasoline powered generator reportedly exploded while he was refueling it.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Department and fire personnel responded. Ammunition inside the home caused popping sounds during the fire, but officials confirmed it did not pose a danger to the public or responders.
Sheriff Oscar Martinez is reminding residents of the serious risks associated with portable generators, especially when handling gasoline.
“Generators are useful during outages, but can be extremely dangerous if used improperly,” said Sheriff Martinez. “Gasoline and a hot generator can be a deadly combination. Please take proper precautions.”
Generator Safety Tips
The Lake County Sheriff’s Department reminds residents:
- Never refuel a hot or running generator. Let it cool completely first.
- Always refuel outdoors only. Never inside a home, garage, or enclosed space.
- Operate outdoors at least 20 feet from structures to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.
- Never use a generator indoors, even with doors or windows open.
- Carbon monoxide is deadly and undetectable—ensure working detectors are installed.
- Keep generators away from flammable materials.
- Use properly rated extension cords only.
- Never connect a generator directly to home wiring. Use a transfer switch installed by a qualified electrician.
- Store gasoline in approved containers away from heat sources.
- Keep children and pets away from generators and fuel.
Sheriff Martinez also reminds residents that firearms and ammunition should be stored safely. During fires, ammunition may pop when exposed to heat. Residents should never re-enter a burning or evacuated structure.
