MICHIGAN CITY — A 16-year-old New Jersey boy died after being recovered from Lake Michigan near Michigan City Monday afternoon, according to Indiana Conservation Officers.

Just before 2 p.m., the LaPorte County Communications Center received a 911 call reporting that a teenage male swimmer had gone underwater and failed to resurface.

Multiple agencies responded to a residential access point along Lake Michigan and immediately began searching for the teen.

At approximately 2:15 p.m., a Michigan City firefighter located the victim, entered the water and brought him back to shore. First responders immediately began lifesaving measures.

The teen, who was from East Brunswick, New Jersey, was transported by ambulance to Franciscan Health Michigan City Hospital, where he later died.

The victim’s identity is not being released at this time.

Indiana Conservation Officers and the LaPorte County Coroner’s Office are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the teen’s death.

The Michigan City Police Department, Michigan City Fire Department, Long Beach Police Department, LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office and LaPorte County EMS assisted at the scene.
