Dangerous Temps To Persist Through Midweek
Arctic air has arrived for the week. A Wind Chill Advisory was issued by NWS for dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills which lasts until Wednesday. Wind chills as low as 30 to 35 below zero are expected. The bitter cold will persist through at least midweek before gradual improving temperatures late week.
The cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as few as 10 minutes. Avoid outside activities if possible. When outside, make sure you wear appropriate clothing, a hat, and gloves.
During this extreme cold weather, leave a faucet dripping to avoid pipes freezing. Opening cabinets with plumbing inside is also recommended, this allows heat to the pipes.
A list of warming shelters was provided by The City of Gary Mayors Office in the comments of this post if the need should arrive. Make sure to check on elderly neighbors in these conditions as well.
Strong west winds will also continue to result in blowing and drifting snow this morning as well, particularly in rural and open areas on north-south roads. Avoid unnecessary travel in rural and open areas until conditions improve later this morning.
