Driver Found Pinned and Extricated In Porter County
An early morning single-vehicle crash occurred in Jackson Township, Porter County near Old Suman Road and U.S. Highway 6 sending the driver to be transported to a South Bend area hospital for care, according to the Liberty Township Fire Department.
The crashed was reported at around
2:30 AM by a passer by who stopped and checked. The passing driver who saw the vehicle off of the North side of road subsequently called 9-1-1 after finding the driver pinned within a severely mangled vehicle. The driver at the time of report was not alert but appeared to still be breathing. The vehicle was found resting in an upright position in approximately one foot of standing water along the road near a wetland where the driver remained trapped until extricated by firefighters on scene.
Firefighters on scene used powered hydraulic rams to force the roof upward off the driver and was able to safely remove the driver out from inside the vehicle. An initial assessment of the driver found multiple open lacerations, a possible deformed spinal injury, and other findings that had medics transporting to a trauma center in South Bend.
The initial findings on scene are believed to be the driver of the mangled vehicle was traveling West bound when for unknown reasons at this time, veered off the road, striking a tree and with the vehicle managing to face the opposite direction of travel along U.S. Highway 6, just before the Old Suman Road crossing.
It is not known at this time when the time of the crash occurred before being called in, Liberty Fire said.
